The Weekend to End Women’s Cancers

The Weekend to End Women's Cancers™ benefiting the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) and Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital (RBWH) offers participants the opportunity to make a real difference in the fight to end breast and gynaecologic cancers.

During one incredible weekend, 26-27 October, 2013, thousands of women and men will join forces for a monumental 60km walk through Brisbane over two days to honour those we’ve lost, celebrate survivors and raise much-needed funds for cancer research and care.

Proceeds from The Weekend will support groundbreaking, critical cancer research at QIMR, whose researchers are working hard to develop accurate diagnostics and new targeted treatments, and also assist RBWH, home of Queensland’s largest Cancer Care Service, purchase vital pieces of equipment and fund world-class clinical research conducted at the hospital.

Further information about the event is available from - www.endcancer.org.au

Queensland Institute of Medical Research

The Queensland Institute of Medical Research Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) is dedicated to translating discoveries into treatments, diagnostics and prevention strategies.

One of QIMR's three research programs is cancer, which incorporates 21 of its laboratories. Cancer is a disease which leads to abnormal cell growth and eventually spreads to other parts of the body.

Some cancers are common in family lineage and are clearly inherited, while others are caused by factors in the environment interacting with genetic susceptibilities. Many forms of cancer can be treated successfully if detected early. More information can be found at www.qimr.edu.au
